Our Story
1913
Congress authorizes the creation of the Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway.
1918
Erection of the Wardman Park Hotel by Harry Wardman.
1924
Famous African-American poet Langston Hughes works as a busboy at the hotel, where he encounters poet Vachel Lindsay and shares his poems. Impressed, Lindsay publicizes his discovery of a new “busboy poet.”
1928
Wardman Tower (or Annex) is designed and built by Mihran Mesrobian.
1931
The Connecticut Avenue Bridge is renamed The Taft Bridge.
1947
The first televised broadcast of NBC's “Meet the Press” takes place at the theater inside Wardman Tower.
1953
The Wardman Park Hotel becomes the Sheraton Park Hotel. Additions to the overnight guest hotel transforms it into a full-scale convention hotel with new large ballrooms.
1980
The Sheraton Washington Hotel is constructed on site.
1981
President Ronald Reagan is shot outside the nearby Washington Hilton Hotel.
1990
Construction is completed on the Washington National Cathedral.
2014
The Woodley Apartments are built.
2026
Wardman Park opens.
